Winter rains

During late February and early March the river level in the Duck Pond reached 58 cm which is higher than noted for many years.

It brought back many memories, for the older generation, about swimming and canoeing in the river when they were children. The higher level was accompanied by a rapid flow which further helped to clear the years of silt backup and expose the chalk & gravel bed.

The natural cycle of groundwater levels reflect the periods of the year. In a ‘normal’ year these conditions occur from October/November until April/May, so the ground water levels start to rise in the autumn reaching their annual peaks in April or May. Thereafter, these water levels decline again until recharge commences the next autumn.
