Work has begun to stabilise the banks and improve the habitat and flow of our historic chalk stream which rises in the Seven Springs area north of Newmarket and flows through to Wicken Fen, the River Cam and onto the Great Ouse.
Berms (low level shelves) have been constructed, which will reinstate the natural sinuosity of the river through the duck pond. Chestnut posts are driven into the river bed next to the river edge with brushwood bundles (faggots) placed between. On top of the faggots, coir rolls will be planted up with aquatic chalk stream plants in the Spring of 2024.
This work has been funded by Exning Parish Council and the Anglian Water Flourishing Environments Fund and is being carried out by riparian owners and village volunteers.
